Rebecca & Mitch ~ Laramie, WY

Wyoming weather is crazy. Coming from a girl who used to live in Denver that says a lot… This weekend started out jam packed with photography. All day Saturday I was planning to shoot soccer team and action photos for Osborne Athletics. Sunday had two engagement photos on the books. The Thursday night we got snow. Not just your everyday run of the mill snowstorm either but a crazy snowstorm that held up until Saturday afternoon. Soccer was definitely postponed. Sunday morning’s session with Brie and Zach had to be rescheduled due to the massive amounts of snow on the ground. My evening session Rebecca & Mitchell had wanted to go for more of an urban feel. So I went out early afternoon, tracking through sloshy snow to check out the current state of our locations. Since they would be in town anyway we decided to go ahead as planned. Fast forward to five o’clock and the snow has miraculously melted leaving sunshine in its place…

Rebecca and Mitch were so easy to photograph. Not only is the tremendous amount of love between them very apparent but they were naturals in front of the camera making my job easy. I feel like every time I would open my mouth to give them some kind of cue they were two steps ahead changing their pose to fit what I was seeing in my mind. Rebecca’s stunning hair and amazing eyes, coupled with the fact that Mitch is an expert on making his lovely fiancé smile and giggle made for some really great photos. My talented husband also came along for this session. I am sure you will recognize his wide angle shot, but my favorite is the portrait with the sun glare. It’s always interesting to me how two photographers (especially when they are me and my husband) will see things completely differently. Rebecca & Mitch you are going to get quite a set of photos… Thank you for coming out even though we anticipated the weather being bad. Rick and I had a lot of fun with the two of you. I cannot wait for you to see the rest of these!

Here is a picture Rick snapped while doing this session. I love this photo as I feel it gives you such a perspective of what we had to work with. Snow, crabgrass, mud, an ACTUAL abandoned warehouse. There is so much that goes into a shoot like this to really pull from its creativity opportunities without showcasing its less than appealing nature.

The Beginning

The other day I was going through my online photo inbox. For me this now consists of thousands of photos that once upon a time were uploaded for one project or another and just never done away with. So much of the junk in there was completely useless now and of course as part of any proper spring cleaning it was promptly deleted. During the process however I came across a photo that I know will never be deleted. It will never be forgotten, never overlooked, never discounted and never taken for granted... the first photo of my professional career. The photo that opened my eyes as a photographer, sparked my passion and still to this day touches my heart and fills me with a sense of purpose, peace and opportunity.

The following photo was taken at a Rodeo in Westcliffe, CO. It was for a feature on the local rodeo that had been commissioned for the Canon City Daily Record. At the time although I liked taking pictures I had not done so professionally as of yet. This was sort of my "audition" for a freelance position within their photo department. The accompanying cut line is so basic (as is the photo) but it definitely takes me back to when everything started. I remember taking this photo with my Kodak CX7530, a far cry from my current baby my D300. I've come so very far as a photographer. I am so blessed to be able to follow my passion as a profession. ‘Works of Man’ ~ Gallery Exhibition Submission

As a photographer I eat, sleep and breathe weddings… When I am NOT photographing weddings however I do manage to maintain a pretty impressive fine art portfolio. Surrounded by beauty as an artist and a photographer I cannot help but being somewhat obsessed with capturing that beauty and presenting in the form of a photograph. Couple my fine art portfolio with the fact that I am so up for any type of photo contest and viola the subject of this blog post, my 3 submissions for the exhibit ‘Works of Man.’ This exhibit is being put on by the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins. The Center is home to exhibit after exhibit of the finest Fine Art Photography throughout the world. In addition to exhibits however they also have classes & groups for both photographers and John Q. Public who just loves great photography.

‘Works of Man’ is based around just that, the work of man… anything man made. Electronics, architecture, crafts, automobiles basically anything made by mankind. These are the three photos I chose for the exhibition. The first of course is Le Tour de Eiffel taken during my visit to Paris last year. With a texture and toning applied to it I wanted it to have a timeless and vintage feel to it. My second submission is the famous Bellagio ceiling fashioned in glass by the talented Dale Chihuly. I just love the colors, the textures etc… this is actually the middle of a three panel photo collection which adorns my own living room wall. My final submission is a driveway in Fort Collins. I was immediately struck by its symmetry and just the radiance of the colors, the leading lines of the trees etc… These submissions will be juried and then if chosen available for viewing at the Center. I will of course let you know more about their progress as it unfolds.

The Knot Real Wedding Submission ~ Meg & Dan

It’s that time of year again… TheKnot.com, one of the wedding industry’s most recognizable and popular sites is accepting entries for their ‘Real Wedding” competition. Vendors and brides alike are invited to share photos and details about their wedding with the hopes of having it featured in their national publication. After the entry is submitted theknot.com members get to rate each wedding and leave comments. Based upon that rating, coupled with the ratings of theknot.com editors and staff winners are chosen for publication. Last year brought me to so many fun places. I worked with some amazing couples but in the end I found my decision to be a piece of cake… I chose Meg & Dan’s Aspen Wedding. There was just something about this wedding that so special. Maybe it was the bond between Meg, Dan and all of their friends. Perhaps it was the amazing, majestic and perfectly Colorado setting. Then again it could have been the most hilarious best man speech I have ever witnessed… Oh who am I kidding this wedding was absolutely wonderful and I am so proud to be able to share it with theknot.com readers. Monday Mischief….

This weekend started with all sorts of plans. Site tours, client meetings and a Mojito headshot mixer with my favorite group of lady photographers were all on the agenda. Then like it always does the Wyoming Weather decided to kick in with full force. There was a point this weekend that I found myself staring out on the deck amazed at 3 ½ feet of snow staring right on back. The highway in and out of my city was closed which made most of my appointments impossible… so instead I spent some time with my new computer. Installed my new Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 2.0…. about 7 hours later viola! Char & Stefanie both of your engagement sessions are done being processed I will have your galleries up shortly. Bryn your album is now on the way to the printer. All of the Osborne Athletics orders are done, bills are paid and I even managed to finish the second book in the twilight series…. I know such a priority right?

It feels good to be completely caught up. Just in time for my next round of pandemonium. Engagement sessions galore, a trip to Vegas, weddings and soccer season have all ravished my calendar. I’m both excited and exhausted just thinking about it lol. This week however I have a particularly wonderful thing to look forward to… RICK’S BIRTHDAY. It is this Thursday and I have some very creative plans in the works. For those of you who don’t know and haven’t become overly sickened by my husband worshipping in this blog lol my husband Rick makes my world go round. I cannot even imagine life without him, not a life worth living anyway. I am so glad that god put him on my heart, what a better day to celebrate than the day he was brought into this world?

April Showers Bring…. Free Custom Guest Books?

Creating a unique and amazing album that really showcases the love between my couples is such a thrill to me. Compiling their favorite wedding photos and creating a custom designed wedding album is an awesome way to hold on to those precious photos as a collection, a storybook of the wedding if you will. This makes perfect sense… Lately I have been asked by a few clients what people DO with their engagement photos though? Save the dates, the announcement in the paper, a photo with a signing mat board… there are so many options. My favorite of all these possibilities however is the custom engagement guest book.

Sports shooter...

When I first started as a photographer I thought for sure sports photography was my calling. There was just something about being behind the camera recording history. There is so much precision and skill that is necessary to anticipate the action and get that perfect moment. But when you do it’s a feeling unlike any other. When I fell in love with wedding photography sports kind of fell by the wayside. When I fell in love with my husband one of the many ways he made my dreams come true is by bringing me back to my roots photographically. Weekend weddings and weekend tournaments can make for a very hectic schedule but I would not have it any other way. I feel so blessed… These past two weekends I was able to be a sports shooter and spend some time with my best friend...my husband.

Two weekends ago we covered the Wyoming Amateur Wrestling State Championships in Laramie, WY. It was a youth tournament that ranged in ages from 4-18… I was covering 2 mats simultaneously which usually puts me in the zone, where I hardly notice what’s actually going on in the matches themselves. I become more focused on the movements and the timing photographically. There were a few ‘moments’ that seemed the catch my eye and touch my heart however. There was a wrestler in the 8-10 age range who had lost the bottom half of his left leg. He came to the mat on crutches and as he approached center walking on one leg and one knee I couldn’t help but thinking how challenging that would make a kids life. Things like riding a bike, roller skating, running around on the playground would all have to be done differently than most children. I started to think about his ‘disadvantage’. Once the match started however I found out just how wrong I was. He dominated his opponent, quick with his skills and sharp with his reflexes. Not only did he win this match but the next one as well. It make me think about how when things do not come easy to us, when we have to work hard to get where we want it takes such a strong individual to triumph through. After winning his match he was lifted by his coach and carried back to his teammates cheering and congratulating him. This was a very powerful moment for me and I felt so lucky to have been a part of it.

Last weekend we were in Cheyenne for the Frontier Refining Youth Skills Basketball Tournament put on by the Cheyenne Parks and Rec. Covering 4 locations is always tricky but armed with myself and 3 other action photographers we managed to get every single team. We strive to get every kid on every team as well which isn’t always possible. One of my favorite moments as a sports photographer however is seeing “that” kid who hardly ever gets to play finally see some ‘game time’. His parents are always cheering so loudly and of course I snap off about a million shots just wanting to make sure I get every second of it! It breaks my heart when kids come up to the booth and cannot find a picture of themselves. I want to take a moment to thank our action photographers. Shooting games for 8-10 hours with dungeonous gyms and the roar of thousands of kids can be very challenging. Chad Spangler, Chris Stark and Kira Horvath you were amazing. The feedback we have gotten back from parents has been amazing, you guys are rock stars!

WPD 2008 Finalist! Please Read & Vote...

This photo has officially been announced as a finalist in the WPD Summer Creative Wedding Photography Contest for 2008. For those of you that are not familiar with the Wedding Photography Directory it is a resource for new brides. They feature top pick wedding photographers, insightful wedding articles and of course as I mentioned also hold a photography contest for their members. This year there were over 3000 entries. After an internal review by WPD these entries were narrows down to only the best 100. The leading finalists are now available for viewing by the public and winners will be chosen by public vote. Char & Chris | Esession ~ Denver, CO

Sitting at our initial consultation before they were even official Ardent clients I remember Char & Chris being so playful, so loving that I just knew they were one of those couples that will always be THAT in love… I was thrilled when they asked me to shoot their wedding at the Stanley this June. Estes Park is June will be lovely, lush greens, nestled in the mountain scenery and big blue sky… for this reason we decided to mix it up a little but with their engagement session. So this past Sunday we made a trip downtown…

We started at the Denver Museum of Art. It is nearly impossible to find locations downtown that have yet to be photographed. So I made it a point to try to photograph those same places in a way that would scream Chris and Char through the pictures. Civic Center Park, The Millennium Bridge, Union Station and this great little alleyway in Central downtown all made lovely canvases for this ‘ubercouple’. Photographing them was so easy, they let their personalities and they love they have for one another just shine though. My camera and I were lucky enough to be invited into their world for the evening! Accompanying me on this shoot was a good friend Anita Roach of Anita Roach Studios. Anita was so helpful, at one point she even ran to get my parched clients some Vitamin water, now that’s THOUGHTFUL. It was fun to trek through downtown and just see what inspiration brought… a great example of this is the first photo in this series. We were walking past Union Station wrapping up our session as the weather turned cold and the light was becoming non existent. Chris mentioned that it might be cool to get a shot on the tracks since there was a train at the station. Char seemed a little unsure of actually being on the tracks so we settled for VERY near the tracks. This was shot on the fly before the train departed. I have got to say this is one of my favorite images. Its screams old time cinema to me, looks like she is seeing him off for the last time, saying goodbye to the love of her life…

Stefanie & Bryan ~ Laramie, WY

When I moved my business to Laramie, WY one of the things I was most looking forward to was being surrounded with a brand new set of locations to shoot at. Places I had never seen, never been to and perhaps even never heard of. Sometimes you can get too used to your surroundings and fail to see them how they truly are. Stefanie and Bryan are an outdoors kind of couple. I will never forget suggesting that Stefanie bring some comfortable shoes to walk in just in case she was planning on wearing heels… “Heels… ugh I am going to need to practice before the wedding.” She is a tennis shoe, jeans and a t shirt kind of girl. A woman after my own heart…

For these shots we started out in downtown Laramie. It was so cold and very windy, I promised Stefanie & Bryan the shot would be worth it though. I think I definitely delivered lol. From there we brought their dog Kodah with us to the University of Wyoming campus. I have done esessions before with dogs and I have got to say Kodah was the best behaved dog that I have ever worked with. She followed all commands, was so happy and content the whole time and not at all distracted by the other dogs & people at the park. This made getting their ‘family’ portrait a piece of cake. We then headed on out to Wallis campground where we took advantage of the cutest little rustic bridge. We ended the session up in the Vedauwoo area.

Stefanie & Bryan were a pleasure to work with. I loved the way Stefanie would look at Bryan. You can tell by the look in her eyes that she absolutely adores him. The feeling is completely mutual too. Shooting on such a cold day Bryan did his absolute best to take care of Stefanie and keep her warm during our shoot. I had a lot of fun and cannot wait till we venture into Curt Gowdy State Park for their wedding this summer. As always here are a few of my faves…

Blessed…

Today with the sun shining down in full force and the breeze blowing through my hair I just felt so blessed. My life like everyone else’s I am sure has had it’s hiccups, it’s ups and downs. But now, here I just feel whole. I am married to the most wonderful man. I really feel as if god made him just for me. He is the one I would choose to walk with through this life all over again. My passion is now my profession, photography has opened my eyes to the world around me. I can feel the change, the improvement, the positive momentum… Things have absolutely taken off and I feel so lucky to have hit the ground running. This weekend is going to be a busy one.

This Saturday and Sunday Osborne Athletics will be at the University of Wyoming Field House covering Wyoming Amateur State Wrestling. I am thrilled to be shooting with both Chad Spangler of Chad Spangler Photography, as well as Loveland Reporter-Herald photographer Christopher Stark. It should prove to be a fun and fast paced day of wrestling action. From the tournament I am headed to shoot an engagement session. This will be my first Wyoming engagement session. I love how I just had to keep my eyes open and go exploring for locations. I have some really fun things planned and scouted some great areas. I know they are going to turn out just lovely.

Sunday I have a Femme Photographie potluck at the lovely and talented Kim Nodurft’s. For those of you who do not know Femme Photographie is a group originally created for women wedding photographers in the Rocky Mountain Region to be able to meet and share ideas. This will be our second monthly meeting. If you are interested in attending please feel free to email me for all the details. Sunday night brings another engagement session this time in the heart of Downtown Denver. I will be treating my clients by inviting the fabulous Anita Roach along for their session. The Art Museum, Union Station, The Millennium Bridge and Civic Center park are all locations we will be shooting at. I cannot wait to get back to that amazing Denver springtime weather. I’m definitely going to be rocking the flip flops for the session.

Sprinkle in some family time and 2 new client meetings and viola there is my busy weekend… Whew just typing this out has made me tired. I wouldn’t have it any other way though. I wish every weekend was as fast paced and photography filled… The best news however is that on this particular weekend business excursion I get to bring my husband with me. Even though we have been married for a while now, I still feel like a newlywed. I hate to be without him! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend I will be back on Monday with a plethora of new and exciting photos!

The Perfect Dress

This past weekend I had the pleasure of photographing the Alfred Angelo on Tour event at Mountain Valley Bridal here in Laramie. Photographing beautiful brides in designer gowns and chatting about wedding plans all day long, does my job get any better? There is something about the confidence that just beams out a new bride when she tries on that perfect dress. You can just tell that it is THE ONE. I got teary eyed on more than one occasion… It was amazing to be able to share in this type of a moment with so many new brides this weekend. As always the ladies at MVB were so accommodating and an absolute treat to work with.

I learned so much about wedding gowns this weekend. In addition to sharing some photos I thought I would share some interesting tidbits as well. Did you know wedding dresses don’t have to be white? They can be white, ivory, gold tone, have color embellishments, beading, trains, sashes etc. Strapless dresses often come with straps that you can have your seamstress sew on for you if that is what you prefer. There is more than ONE way to bustle a dress depending on the look you’re trying to achieve. Dresses meant for bridesmaid attire can also be ordered in white is simplicity is more your thing. Believe it or not I am not the only crazy yahoo who wants to get married in flip flops, they come VERY dressy and perfectly suitable for such an occasion. However perhaps the most important thing I learned is this… TRY EVERYTHING ON. On the rack the dresses look so different. What you like or dislike on someone else can be (and often is) totally different than what you will like on your own body. I witnessed girls who wanted a short dress end up loving a long train, ladies against color who ended up adding green to their dress (yes green) and countless other anti strapless brides find the perfect strapless gown. A good bridal consultant is worth their weight in gold and Amanda and Keileigh at Mountain Valley Bridal are the best. The Alfred Angelo tour is over and sadly all those dresses have been sent back to the designer however, MVB has an amazing selection of non tour Alfred Angelo dresses as well as many other designers making finding your dress easy.

Alfred Angelo has been offering bridal gowns and bridal party attire for 75 years. Their designer Michael Shettel is phenomenal. Gowns come in a variety of silhouettes, fabrics, colors etc… Perhaps the most noticeable thing about an Alfred Angelo gown is the perfect attention to detail. Exquisite embroidery, delicate lace and precise beadwork really transform their creations. Each of their gowns is individually created and meticulously sewn for the bride who will be wearing it. They offer customizations as well to make your gown as unique as you are. Did I mention they are super affordable? I thought for sure with the ornate beadwork and custom creation they would be out of most people’s price range.

Every year Mountain Valley Bridal in Laramie, WY hosts the Alfred Angelo on Tour event. During the event they feature Michael Shettel’s favorite designer gowns from this season. 14 never before seen gowns will be available on the tour in addition to another 10-15 gowns that have never been featured at MVB. The event is happening March 13-15th and gowns are available to try on by appointment only. Mountain Valley Bridal is located in the heart of downtown Laramie at 220 S 2nd St. If you haven’t booked an appointment yet call the gals at MVB (307) 742-9771 fast because last I checked they were almost gone.

Ok ok so what is the point of this post Stephanie? Are you just being helpful? Showing your favorite vendors some love? A Moment...

This weekend I had one of those *moments*. I was in my car after shooting some getting ready photos at the Mia Bella Salon in Wheatridge, CO. I was on my way to the ceremony site in Morrison, music playing and windows down. I found myself smiling uncontrollably, singing at the top of my lungs and filled with such happiness at being able to have my passion, my love be my profession. You mean people pay me to travel to interesting places and use my camera? That is a sweet deal no matter who you are. I live for moments like those. I am so fortunate and I never take it for granted. I get chills when I capture that look from a groom so in love with his bride. I’m that photographer with the fish eye lens getting yelled at by the venue coordinator for stepping in their flowers again to get that perfect angle. Nothing thrills me more than returning home to my husband excited like a little kid to show him the “money shots” I got throughout my day.

This weekend I had the pleasure of second shooting for my dear friend Amy Wadlington of True Photography. Jordan and Chris held an intimate ceremony and reception at the Willow Ridge mansion in Morrison, CO. They were such a laid back couple. Not overly concerned with the little details that can drive most couples mad, these two were there to celebrate the love they had for each other. It was a beautiful short and sweet ceremony followed by a lovely reception that featured perhaps the best cake cutting I have ever witnessed. These two did not hold back, we are talking cake shoved into nostrils ladies and gentleman.

It’s always interesting to me, second shooting. When you are the primary photographer there are certain shots you have to take, certain responsibilities you have for your clients. As a second shooter you just have to have open eyes and an open mind. You basically get to be in observer mode the entire time seeking out interesting angles, intimate interactions and other moments that would normally have gone unseen. As an artist second shooting helps me to hone my creativity and see the wedding as a whole, not just a chain of events being photographed. I like to second shoot from time to time especially with photographers who I admire. I hope I never stop learning and improving, this is such a great avenue for me to do both. Twitter

Us photographers embrace technology. Gadgets, Gizmos, Blogs, Flashy Portfolio sites and now Twitter. If you haven’t jumped on the twitter bandwagon yet I have one question for you: why not?

What is twitter? Twitter is you and what your up to, real time in 140 characters or less. Think of it as your facebook status update, a conversation with a long lost friend, a marketing campaign, job search and social network all rolled into one addicting little networking tool.

As a photographer I use twitter to communicate with other photographers across the country. I exchange ideas with wedding planners and discuss things with past and potential clients. I keep people informed as to what is going on in my life. I use twitter to broadcast my new blog posts and promotions to the world. Sometimes I even use twitter to give a ‘shout out’ to my husband letting him know just how wonderful I think he is.

Twitter isn’t just for photographers. People can use it to stay in touch with friends and family. You can have the day’s news, weather and celebrity gossip twittered to you. Use it to create your own mobile to do list or simply to connect with others who share your same interests. Twitter is absolutely free and absolutely addicting. Don’t say I didn’t warn you! Wedding Photography is such an odd profession. Where as most businesses build up their client base once then get to reap the rewards year after year, wedding photography is a whole different animal. One can definitely make the argument that wedding clients treated wonderfully will bring you business beyond their wedding day. Maternity photos, baby shoots, family portraits etc.... While this is definitely true in order to keep a steady flow of WEDDING clients a good studio is VERY productive in their ‘off’ season.

I have completely revamped almost all of my product offerings and marketing materials over the last two weeks. This week will mark the launch of a big newspaper campaign and this weekend I will be showing at the Laramie Bridal Expo here in Wyoming. It is being held in the Laramie Hilton’s Ballroom located at 2229 Grand St. In addition to photographers the expo will also feature local venues, florists, tuxes, catering… Amanda Juarez from Mountain Valley Bridal will be there showing off their fabulous collections. Every business showing at the festival is donating a prize worth at least $50.00 to be raffled off to attendees. Admission to the festival is free and it can be an excellent way to not only connect with vendors but also to meet other brides in your area!

Be sure to stop by the Ardent booth and say hello. I will have two lovely canvas prints on display as well as a new sample album. If that’s not enough to bring you by did I mention that I am baking 12 dozen homemade chocolate chip cookies? My mission is now to STAY away from those cookies. I love to run but there is no way I can run 12 dozen cookies off lol. The Wedding Album ~ Your first family heirloom…

Once you wedding day has come and gone it is time to figure out what to do with those wonderful pictures… how you will remember this special time in your lives. Some choose to scrapbook the photos, some place them inside an album they’ve obtained on their own, canvas prints, or perhaps just a memory box… One of the BEST ways to remember your day and showcase all the lovely photos you have received is with a custom wedding album.

When I first began offering my clients wedding albums the current trend was big bulky leather albums that cost a small fortune for one, but also only held a limited number of photos. The photos were either mounted to the pages or slipped into a sleeve that held them in place. Not my cup of tea whatsoever. It was then that I fell in love with ‘Magazine Style’ albums. I wanted to make my albums affordable, classic, timeless, high quality and modern. Something you could pass down throughout the generations that didn’t look dated and dingy from wear and tear.

Ardent albums are still magazine style even today. This means the photos are not mounted to the pages but rather printed ON the pages. Album pages are made of a thick paper and coated with UV coating which will protect them from signs of aging. It’s cover is made of a hard laminate which will feature photos from the wedding both front and back. Your name as well as the studio name will adorn the spine for easy location if you choose to put it in your bookshelf. One of the loveliest things about an Ardent Album is the fact that the pages are ‘hinged’ When you open a book there is always a divot in the middle of the spine… this makes it difficult to see pictures that may be close to the center and nearly impossible to have a photo cover more than one page… it limits you creatively if you will. Ardent Albums lay completely flat when open which allows me to span an amazing photo over two full pages. This is very impressive in the final product.

Besides the high quality craftsmanship and unique features of our albums there is so much that goes into the design process. Most photographers utilize templates for album creation. There are a number of layouts that you just digitally ‘pop’ photos into. Backgrounds are usually taken from stock photography sites. Template albums by their very nature will look the same from client to client. I CUSTOM DESIGN EVERY ALBUM… From the colors I use, background photos, borders, text of your vows… everything is from your wedding and designed to be completely unique to your day, your style. I layout the pages based upon what will look amazing with the photos you’ve marked as your must haves, NOT based on how many photos my template for that page will hold.

DIY #1 ~ Monograms...

"I found out very early that monograms are a great way to bring everything together cohesively in your wedding. You can use them on the invitations, ceremony décor, favors, even on the dance floor. Monograms are simply initials, usually the first letter of the groom’s last name, combined with the couple's names or first name initials. I decided to create a monogram for our wedding, and decided that paying someone to do design it was out of the question. I created ours in Microsoft PowerPoint, and saved the file as a .JPG file so that it's usable in other programs and uploadable to the internet. You can also create one using Paint with the same methods.

I first open up a blank slide in PowerPoint. Depending on how you'd like the monogram to look, you'll need to size the slide accordingly. If you're making a rectangular shaped design, your slide should be something like 5" high by 15" long; if you're doing a square design, using a 10"x10" slide will work. The larger the slide, the better the .JPG file will come out looking. I will give instructions for our initial design: a square monogram.

Once you've opened PowerPoint, go to File>page setup and set your slide size to Width: 10 inches and Height: 10 inches. Click OK. You can use the objects and shapes features to start your design. For our monogram, I first create a large "G" as the middle letter and main part. I create a WordArt object and used Edwardian Script ITC font. I change the fill color and line color black. I opted for no shadow on the G. I then enlarge the G to the desired size and center it on the slide. Next, I create two more WordArt objects for our names, Brian first, and Sarah second. I use Engravers font for these, size them to the correct size, fill them in black, and unselect any shadow. I then copy and paste the G, fill it in with the champagne color, enlarge it and center it behind the black G. Lastly, I use the Rectangle drawing object to create the boxes around the outside. The date can be added and other details also.

The finished product should look something like this... For our wedding, we're using a simplified version of our monogram (the last one) on on the belly band of our invitations, and also on our "wish bowl" cards. "

My Valentine

Warning mushy, lovey dovey ramblings about my overly perfect husband to follow. Don’t say I didn’t warn you lol…

This Valentines day I ended up having to work. My husband’s company Osborne Athletics secured the contract for a big gymnastics meet in Fort Collins. So from the time we headed out of Laramie at 8:30 a.m. to when it finally wrapped up at 6:30 p.m. business was at the top of my mind. When covering an event my husband and I hardly ever see each other… we are in charge of two totally different aspects of the business and our paths rarely cross. Completely exhausted from a full day of shooting and booked for meetings the following day in Denver we stayed in town at the Fort Collins Hilton. I thought it was a little odd when Rick wanted to check us in and left me with the task of parking the car. For those of you who don’t know me I don’t drive in the snow lol. After parking I entered our hotel room greeted by a beautiful bouquet of flowers. We ordered room service including my absolute favorite dessert chocolate marquise. It was a lovely evening…

There are a couple of things you should know about my husband… First off he is the most thoughtful man I have ever met. He cares about me and my hopes, dreams, thoughts…. Stock piles information on my favorite everything! He is the perfect gift giver… He is wonderful, charming and incredibly clever. He is my match in any conversation. He is a man’s man, the kind of man every guy wants to (and should) be… The kind of guy every girl wishes they could have as THEIR VALENTINE (stay away gymnastic moms he is MINE jk). This Valentines Day in addition to my wonderful night out I received the following as my ‘present’…

My husband and I had a very simple wedding ceremony. We wrote our own vows, got married in the park and had my brother in law speak in leau of an officiant. I adore ring shots and ALWAYS make sure my brides get a great one (or seven lol). One thing I never did get however was a ring shot… These are our rings, on our wedding vows… processed into the most beautiful gift. Its perfect, he is perfect and I am as always a very lucky girl!

Wedding Album ~ Kara & Scott

Kara and Scott were an absolute joy to work with. I had so many favorite images from their wedding in Estes Park. I was thrilled to find out they would be wanting an album. Boudoir Session ~ Miss K

Miss K and I met at the Hyatt Regency in the Tech Center. I absolutely loved how artistic and modern their rooms were. I could tell from the beginning that Miss K was up for anything, loved to laugh and would be a lot of fun to shoot. When having a boudoir session it’s very important that you have a lot of rapport with your photographer. We hit it off and I can honestly say I have never laughed as much as I did during her session last Sunday.

Armed with her arsenal of phenomenal lingerie I found myself climbing on chairs & desks to get creative. In addition to the normal steamy seductive shots I absolutely loved how many candid beautiful shots I got of Miss K mid laugh. I always give my clients the final say on whether or not their images are blogged. I of course also hold a high standard as to the types of images I would feature on this blog as I know many people check it from work. Here are a few of my favorites shown only in silhouette for privacy.

Go GREEN! And save some green along the way...

This last year I had the pleasure of photographing Kara Albright's wedding in Estes Park, CO. Kara is an amazing person and really opened my eyes as to the importance of caring for our environment in our day to day lives as well as when planning a special event such as a wedding. I thought it would be an excellent idea to feature some advice on how to go about planning a green wedding... Without further adeau here is Kara...

"Living in Colorado, one might think it would be easy to plan a green wedding. However, this task was a little more difficult than I thought. Working as an environmental planner, it was important to me to have at least some aspects of my wedding be “green”. There ended up being some sacrifices, either due to cost or unavailability. Flexibility is also key… you can’t afford to be super picky about the types of flowers, invitations, etc. However, we were so pleased with the way everything turned out; we wouldn’t have changed a thing!

One of the first things I did was to find a florist. I did numerous internet searches for organic florists and kept coming up short- I was thinking of just ordering some flowers from an online mega-florist, until I happened across Plum Sage Flowers. Plum Sage is run by Erin Hornstein, out of her NW Denver studio. I gave her free reign, with the exception of a few colors I didn’t want, and she was able to find an organic farm, not far from Denver, that would allow her to pick out all of the flowers she wanted for our arrangements. They ended up being gorgeous and organic...

Next step was the invitations. Since we were having a mountain wedding in Estes Park, I didn’t want something fancy and ornate, I wanted something more natural, and of course, 100% recycled. Twisted Limb Paperworks is located in Indiana; however, they have an online store. All of their paper is either handmade or 100% recycled cardstock. We ended up with simple, but elegant invitations, embossed with small evergreen trees at the bottom. Also, instead of having reply cards with envelopes, we saved a few trees by using postcards (included in the invite price) for reply cards. In addition, instead of sending out “save the date” cards, we used emails to remind everyone- it’s easier, cheaper, and greener!

I had to sacrifice on the food and cupcakes… the only organic cake place that I found was really expensive and didn’t do cupcakes, so I sacrificed that little one. Our out-of-town gift bags though, were also made of 100% recycled paper (from nashvillewraps.com), as were our place cards for our guests. The place cards were attached to corks from the numerous bottles of wine we had consumed over the previous year and our centerpieces were wine bottle lanterns, also created from our wine consumption! Remember, reuse of items is also important!

Lastly, one thing that was really important to me was the recycling of alcohol bottles at the reception. The place we had the reception didn’t offer recycling, so the day-of planner we hired (her job was just to coordinate the ceremony/reception), Julie Farnham with Seasons of the Heart, brought the recycling bins from her home and amazingly carted away all of the wine/beer/liquor bottles at the end of the night.

Oh, and don’t forget your registry! If you try to live as green of a lifestyle as you can, places like Bed, Bath, and Beyond and Crate and Barrel have plenty of natural, organic, and sustainable items for your registry."

I am so impressed with the valiant effort Kara put forth on keeping her wedding green. I would encourage every bride to try and keep the environment fresh in your mind when making your wedding plans... Being a wedding photographer I am fortunate to be able to work with many wonderful wedding vendors. Photographers should be flexible?

This weekend I had the pleasure of photographing gymnastics with my husband’s company Osborne Athletics. The event was the Wyoming School of Gymnastics Invitational meet and let me just tell you that in a million years I could not master a single move those boys did!

Rings, floor, pommel horse, and parallel bars… shooting gymnastics is challenging because for the gymnasts safety photographers are not allowed to use flash. This requires the highest quality lenses and camera equipment on the market – if your going to do it right. I was thrilled to try out my D300 in this low light no flash situation. I was pleasantly surprised when even shooting under these demanding conditions my equipment performed better than I could even anticipate! Bring on those low lit no flash churches… I’m ready!

There is just something about getting away. There is something to be said for packing a bag, hitting the road and not looking back. Isn’t life always better on vacation? This weekend I am making an escape.

Saturday I am shooting Gymnastics in Laramie… Afterwards Rick and I are headed to Fort Collins for some “us” time. Its funny we were both laughing that sometimes a good date night ‘out’ for us consists of ordering Chipotle to go, staying at the Hilton and cuddling up for some movie watching. Not to mention my favorite dessert in the entire world… Chocolate Marquis.

Sunday I will be visiting my family and having a lunch date at Commons Park, where Rick and I were married in April. Just in time too from what I hear as my Denver friends are all rubbing it in about how beautiful the weather has been down there. There is a certain way I feel entering the park. I love being in the heart of the city yet surrounded by nature… The only thing that could make it better is if they wouldn’t have gotten rid of Eyt, a great little salad shop/gelato place across the street. A girl can’t ask for the world though can she?

After that I have client meetings then will head back home where work beckons. Client albums, DVD’s, new marketing materials, a bridal fair and local ad campaign will keep me plenty busy through this next week. I better enjoy my R&R while I can…

So many details go into a wedding. Invitations, decorations, save the dates etc… Your wedding is a reflection of you. It can be a very daunting task to try and sort through the thousands of wedding vendors hoping to find that little piece of you in their work. How about the fact that the décor/products purchased through these vendors is mass marketed to the public and could be seen in a number of weddings in your area. Wouldn’t it be great to personally create something unique and one of a kind to be used on the most important day of your life? That is the theory behind the modern wedding DIY (Do It Yourself) movement. One Ardent Bride, Sarah Norton has DIY down to a science. Her work is beautiful, contemporary, high quality and unique. She has created a number of stunning DIY projects for her own wedding this May. I thought it might be a wonderful idea to feature some of these products on the Ardent Blog. Each Tuesday Sarah will be sharing a new post with us showcasing a project from start to finish. Be sure to check back in May after their wedding to sneak a peak at how everything came together on the big day. Without further adieu, I will hand things over to Sarah.

“When we got engaged in October of 07, we already had our colors picked out and the overall feel of our wedding was clear in our minds. Our wedding would be simple and elegant, and in the spring. For our colors, I had been inspired by a homepage photo on the David’s Bridal website. It featured a couple and their wedding party, decked out in the color wine. From that picture, everything for our wedding fell in to place- the season, the feel, the decorations.

Brian is a huge fan of anything red and also a wine snob, so having wine as our color was perfect. I also liked the combination of wine with champagne, a shimmery tan color, much darker than ivory. Later, we added azalea (hot pink) to the mix, to give off more of a spring feel, since our wedding is in May. Very quickly I figured out how I'd like our invitations to look, also inspired on the David’s Bridal site.

As I got more into the planning, everything became so muddy in my mind. I wasn't sure how everything would look together. Would it be cohesive? Would it look elegant? Should I attempt to DIY or just pay the money, and purchase the items? How much money could I save? Would it look tacky? Then in the mix of trying to find pictures for inspiration and DIY projects that I could do, I found ProjectWedding.com. Instantly, I was addicted. I have not only re-defined my ideas, but also gotten new and unique ideas from the forum there. This opened up a whole new world of possibilities! I have been able to help other gals now with my projects, as I have been helped so many times.

I now am a FIRM believer in DIY projects, not only to save money, but to give your wedding that extra little "touch" that will remain in the minds of your friends and family. Instead of having "just another wedding", you can easily have the wedding of your dreams that is absolutely unique to you and your mate! From the tiniest little rhinestone details to the overall venue setting and meal choices, I know that our wedding will be memorable, as we have poured our hearts into bringing to life a day that reflects Brian and I entirely.”

Aftermath…

The best thing about shooting sports is being right in the middle of the action. Tournaments especially are such an awesome occasion. Make or break time for many young athletes looking for greatness. Sports photographers get to be in the heart of it all mat side watching the whole thing through the lens. The worst thing about shooting sports is how sore you are the next day. Sports photographers tense their bodies up, using them as a make shift tripod. The fact that my 80-200mm lens weighs 3 lbs by itself could also be a contributing factor lol. None the less I was thrilled to be shooting sports this past Saturday with my husband and his company http://osborneathletics.com. Here are a few of my faves…

Event Photography

I love to shoot weddings. I am a wedding photographer’s wedding photographer at heart… But my second love, my roots are in sports photography. For those of you who don’t know in addition to photographing for my own clientele I also love to shoot for my husbands company Osborne Athletics. This weekend I get to flex my ‘sports photographer' muscles and shoot with the big lens all day long!

This Saturday is the Wyoming Amateur Wrestling Associations Metro District tournament. This will be their last season meet before their state tournament (which we are also covering). My husband and I both have a soft spot for youth sports. After having the pleasure of working with a lot of different clubs on a more personal level it is just amazing how much time and energy goes into these programs. They are almost entirely run by parent volunteers and supported entirely by fundraising. The people involved give their heart and soul to give their kids the gift of being able to participate in the sports that they love. I am just awestruck at the level of commitment they demonstrate. Rick and I leave almost every tournament with an awesome story about an athlete completely overcoming adversity to excel in spite of horrendous odds.

So be sure to check back on Monday… I’ll be posting a few of my faves. I’ll leave you today with a photo (as always). This photo is very dear to my heart as it is from the ‘early years’ lol. When I was a freelance photojournalist in Southern Colorado I had the great opportunity to photograph the Colorado High School State Football Championship game. The weather was horrid but the intensity that those athletes displayed during the game was amazing. I caught this photo as the player was walking off the field after the victory. I feel like the photo really captures the moment…

2 tickets to ANYWHERE…

Last year in April my husband and I honeymooned in Paris… Intercontinental travel is a daunting experience for those of you who never have. We spent about 12 hours in flight each way. It was one of the best experiences of my whole entire life. I found French scarves, Pain Au Chocolat (chocolate croissants) and got to immerse myself in Montparnasse, the art district of Paris.

Rick and I chose to avoid the whole Paris cliché and wanted to really choose an area where Paris was less commercial, more authentic… Montparnasse is famous for being the heart of intellectual and artistic life in Paris. Galleries, Farmer Markets, Creperies and Cafes were all within walking distance. Each morning we would wake up and visit our favorite little bakery Il Fournil Du Maine. There we would get Pain Au Chocolat and Red Bull, go back to our hotel Le Meridian and watch the pink panther. After breakfast we would just go explore. The gardens of Paris are exquisite. I love how Parisians flock to Jardin du Luxembourg and just seem to spend all day enjoying life. Tennis courts, playgrounds, benches, long winding paths… If I could live anywhere else in this world it would be there. I would love to go back and bring my children someday.

Coming home from a vacation is never fun. But it is especially unpleasant when an already long trip home turns into the LONGEST amount of time it has ever taken anyone to get home EVER! We flew from Paris to Chicago, then were delayed about 4 hours. Turns out the plane that we were scheduled for did not have enough seats?!?! We ended up being delayed in the Chicago airport for nearly 5 hours. Thank god for the airport Starbucks although even that didn’t keep me content for long. We finally boarded the plane, upgraded to first class and were too tired to enjoy it. I remember touching down in Denver so late that the airport was empty. Strangest thing to see busy DIA stripped of its hustle and bustle, just still.

Ok so where is this trip down memory lane going? What is up with the title of this post? Long story short due to our horrendous ordeal with the flight home we were issued two round trip tickets to fly anywhere in the US gratis. Now the question remains – WHERE?

The possibilities are endless. We considered getting lost in NYC, contemplated Golfing in South Carolina even thought about trading in our tickets towards a trip to Italy. Oooooh the possibilities! SO lets hear it… if you had two tickets to anywhere, where would you choose to go and why?

Client Questions Answered: What Makes You Different?

With this wide world of wedding photographers to choose from I find it refreshing when clients ask me... What makes you different? Although this is something I always try to cover in my meetings I think it definitely has its place here on my blog as well.

From my shooting style to my packages there are a number of things I feel make me unique as a photographer. I would like to take some time to highlight these things.

Photojournalistic Coverage ~ The newest trend nowadays is wedding photojournalism. If done right it’s not a “trend” whatsoever. I consider wedding photojournalism to be telling the story of the wedding, creatively, candidly and completely through photographs. While many photographers may call themselves wedding photojournalists I think me having been an actual photojournalist sets me apart. I see things differently. My eyes are trained in observer mode. I can not only recognize key moments, intricate details and emotional exchanges but capture them in a way that tells the story of what is going on.

2 Photographers Standard ~ Weddings are filled with events. Again with my emphasis on complete coverage I always think it is such a shame that couples with a single wedding photographer often times have to choose what gets covered and what will be forgotten. My solution to this predicament is to include 2 photographers in every one of my packages. Ardent clients get photos of the bride AND the groom getting ready, two different perspectives of every important event and double the photos.

CD Of All Images ~ Why all photographers do not give their clients images on CD I will never understand. Yes there is something to be said for having your photos printed from your photographer. Higher quality paper, exact color matching, prints that will last 100 years or more are just a few reasons to print through a professional. BUT what about those of us who like to keep our photos digitally? Those who like to email, post to facebook or just want to be able to print our photos on our own timeframes? I provide my clients with BOTH options. On your CD you can find a color version & black and white copy of all of your photos.

Online Gallery/Turnaround ~ I’m impatient by nature. I open Christmas presents early, give birthday gifts weeks before the actual date. I pester my husband for details each and every time he plans a surprise for me. Because of this I don’t like to make my clients wait for their photos. When I originally started my business like most photographers I reserved 4-6 weeks for delivery of my finished product. This year I am cutting this time to 3 weeks. For those of you that like me love a little instant gratification… I will also be uploading the photos as they are done to an online gallery to share with family and friends. You can now view your photos on your honeymoon & share them with friends and family halfway across the world .

Artistry ~ I truly believe great wedding photography is an art form. Weddings in their very nature are beautiful events. Beyond being a photographer who can get you great photos from a technical side I like to present my clients with many high end artistic representations as well. Photography obsessed I love staying on top of trends in the industry, cross processing, textures, vintage effects… all have their place in my heart and on my virtual palette.

Experience ~ This is a biggie. Your wedding is a once in a lifetime event. There are no do overs, no retakes, no getting it right the second time around. After the day is gone so are your flowers, your cake, the food, music, decorations etc… The way you will remember your day will largely be through your photographs. This is a HUGE responsibility. Not one that I personally take lightly. I have over 2 years experience shooting weddings as a PRIMARY. I am photography obsessed and always refining my skills, honing my craft. You can put your trust in me. I use the highest quality Nikon equipment (the newest on the Market today) and always carry a back up. Heck my assistants are even required to have backups. Your photos once taken are kept in 3 different places and after your wedding permanently archived. My photos are not lost or deleted.

I am sure there are many other differences but for me these are key areas I am proud of. New Toy

For those of you who don't know I am a technology girl. Boy do I love my gadgets... I am also blackberry dependant, its my brain, my favorite communication tool and something without which I would lose all function jk. That being said this past weekend I upgraded to the new touch screen Blackberry Storm.

Its like it was made for me. You use its big beautiful crisp screen to show off photos, instantly uploads to both flickr and facebook, and allows me to browse my favorite blogs full screen and best of all has enough gadgets, gizmos and programs to keep me busy learning how to use the darn thing.

All the best features of a blackberry combined with the perks of the iphone. Even better that I can use it with Verizon as weddings take me all over... I need a phone that is going to work everywhere.

Femme Photographie

One of the things I promised myself I would do this year is network with other photographers in my area. I wanted to open my eyes, take a look around this big old state and find photographers that inspired me... While chit chatting with a few friends it dawned on me that instead of casual one on one coffee encounters I could create the experience I was really seeking... A network of professional women photographers in Colorado that could share ideas, inspiration and camaraderie. Thus Femme Photographie was born.

What is it? ~ Femme Photographie is a group intended for women wedding photographers in the Rocky Mountain Region. Once a month we will have lunch somewhere central and 'talk shop'.

What can you expect to gain from this? ~ Friends, Colleagues, Referrals... all of the above. Perhaps I can best answer this question by sharing what I personally hope to get out of it... I want to meet photographers whose work inspires me. I want to find out how they work, how they stay inspired. I want a network of ladies I can refer clients to when I am already booked. I want to know others that are in my same industry to share advice, stories and conversation with.

2009! Happy New Year...

I've always been one of those people that come up with new years resolutions. I am a planner, I love listing things, making goals, coming up with the how to behind it all. This naturally carries over into my professional life as well. 2008 was such an amazing year for Ardent. 2009 is already shaping up to be even better. I wanted to share with you some of my resolutions....

Give Back ~ This next year I will be working with hospitals and schools throughout Colorado & Wyoming donating sessions to those who may be in need. Newborn sessions, maternity sessions, children & seniors... I know how much I treasure my own photographs and I believe this should be something everyone has in their life.

Get Better ~ I am excited this year to be doing some second shooting for other photographers that I admire, photographers that I can really learn from. Being a second shooter really allows me to take a slower pace during a wedding, cultivating my creative eye to see things even different than the primary photographer would. It helps me to become more creative and expand my abilities.

Get Personal ~ This year I had a camera upgrade, new lenses, new blog, new website... This is all the building blocks of making Ardent more personal, more "me". Wedding photography is enhanced by "connections" I want to really get to know my clients and in turn have then get to know me.

Get Creative ~ Textures, fish eye, slideshows... This year is the year I take my photography to the next level. I'm really excited about these things.

On a personal note in 2009 I am also going to:

- Become an owner of a brand new condo!
- Start a family
- Travel to NYC
- Run a 5k

Here is to a wonderful new year filled with promise!

10. Fall's last leaf... I am a huge bokeh addict and I just love the way this seasons last leaf is just perfectly set among the creamy velvet bokeh of the background.

9. Breydon - Isn't he a cutie, by far my favorite baby photo.

8. Kara & Scott Formal - I love the bouquet on this. The angle is one that I have done before but the sky, their love, the colors it just all comes together for me here.

7. Bryn & Daniel's Wedding Party - I often try my hand at being creative with my photos. What happens more often than not is I love it in the moment then hate it the next week. I love the texture and the cross processing on this. Gives it that little extra.

6. Maroon Bells - Aspen, CO I would love to take credit for this shot being so well... AMAZING. The truth is probably everyone who goes there gets this shot. I love it none the less.

5. Jennifer and Allen - I am a tight shooter. I like things to be close up. Now my husband well he likes wide angle, to show the whole picture. I think I love this photo because it is so different for me. One of my favorite things in the world is the dark contrasty look after a rain. I think this photo embodies that for me.

4. Sarah & Brian - I've captured love, peace, tranquility, bliss... Never have I ever captured PASSION like this. Sarah & Brian were so much fun to work with, up for anything. This is fire, intensity and love all wrapped up into one photo.

3. The Dress - Flare when done in an artistic way can be so beautiful. I take a LOT of dress shots... I love this one. The way the dress sihlouettes against the stained glass windows is just so symbolic. Beautiful!

2. Chloe - For those of you who may not know my husband and I suffered a loss when I miscarried in October. Life didn't stop, work didn't stop in fact I shot a wedding AND an engagement session that very weekend. While on the way back from the wedding to the engagement session we got stalled on a google detour through Rocky Mountain National Park. In the middle of a snowstorm there was this clearing of picturesque aspen trees. I found peace in those trees, that moment...

1. The One - I cannot even begin to express how much of a difference it makes to have someone love and support you as much as my husband does. This is my favorite photo of this year. It is of a note that was included with my new camera. I've never been loved so much!

Things I am thankful for...

The holidays are always a time of reflection for me. Maybe its the end of the year drawing closer or all the time spend with family and friends just being in the now, blissfully happy. I wanted to take the time before it got away from me to write a post about the people & things I am most thankful for this holiday season. In no particular order...

My Husband ~ He is my rock, my hero, my support and the man of my dreams. No woman ever had it this good... I am sure of it. God blessed me when he put Rick into my life. Rick is the kind of man that every man should be... He is loving, thoughful, loyal, driven, handsome and just amazing. He's the guy that makes you tea in the middle of the night when your sick, lovingly teases his inlaws making my momma smile, the man who dreams BIG and has the motivation to see it through. There are big plans in store for this little family of ours. I cannot wait!

My Parents ~ This year something clicked for me when it came to family. I was no longer a 30 minute holiday visitor at my parents house (as I had been in the past). This year I can honestly say I saw my family more than I have since I left home for this big old world. I try to call my Mom everyday just to say hi, bring lunch by for no reason at all and surprise them with gifts just because. My mom and dad are amazing. They are so loving, accepting, encouraging and just wonderful. They give so much of themselves without asking anything in return, I try every day to make them proud and be the kind of daughter they deserve.

My Inlaws - I met Rick's parents for the first time after a wedding. I drove the 3 hours to get to Laramie still dressed up from shooting and had butterflies in my stomach the entire way. When I arrived at their house there was a connection - immediately. It was less like meeting his parents for the first time and more like visiting my own family whom I hadn't seen in a while. I am blessed to have TWO families that love and support me. I am thankful for everything they add to my life.

My Passion - A day with my camera in my hands is a good day for sure. I feel so lucky to have found something to inspire me. Something that just fills my entire heart and allows me to touch the hearts of others. Before I found photography I didn't consider it necessary for a person to love their job. It was just a source of income right? I could not have been more wrong. Photography has taught me so much about who I am. Everyday I get to do what I love and photograph people in love! I have the best job in the entire world and I never take this for granted.

My Religion ~ There was a time not so far back that I was an agnostic. Too young and caught up in my own life to "look into" this whole god thing lol. I remember always feeling like I was a part of something bigger, being taken care of, watched over. This year that feeling is unmistakeable. I have had so much happen this year. Wonderful things like marrying the man of my dreams, travelling the world, being blessed with a pregnancy. Devastating things like the passing of my grandmother, losing a child... Throughout it all its been my faith in god, my faith in fate and things happening for a reason that has brought me peace.

Photographer Tip: Ask to view the WHOLE wedding...

...better known as a way not to fall for the bait and switch technique.

For those of you who know me its VERY unlike me to be negative or pessimistic about things. I am writing this post after being deeply saddened by a horrible trend that many couples are falling prey to while choosing their photographer. While I am in no way claiming that ALL photographers employ this tactic when dealing with a once in a lifetime event one is always better safe than sorry.

A photographers website is a very interesting tool. It includes biographical information letting you know who they are and what they've done. It includes pricing information so you know what you can expect investment wise. Testimonials can help you to know how past clients felt about the services they received. Of course the obvious and most useful things found on a photographers website are THEIR PHOTOS.

As artists rather than bombard our potential clients with thousands upon thousands of images we try to narrow it down to a 'working portfolio'. This is usually comprised of out top 25 or so images in a number of categories. These photos are representative of the type of work and the type of vision you can expect when we are hired.

Weddings are such a beautiful event... Beautiful people, dressed to the nines, set in a gorgeous environment sharing their special day with friends and family. Those laughing, crying, touching moments will present themselves WITHOUT being coaxed out by your photographer. Even an amateur can capture a few of these key moments.

Here is where the bait and switch tactic has been rearing its ugly head. Photographers websites filled with 25 or so exceptional images... then when the final photos are delivered its like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, as if a whole OTHER photographer shot the entire thing! How does something like this happen? Very easily unfortunately... By viewing a photographers website portfolio you are merely glimpsing a small portion of their work, the BEST portion of their work.

How can you combat this? Most photographers nowadays provide online galleries to their clients. Ask your photographer to see the last wedding they shot... in its ENTIRETY. This allows you not only to see the oooh and ahhh photos they would like to see but what you can REALLY expect to see from your own wedding. While viewing a full wedding collection here are a few things you can ask yourself to gauge whether or not the photographer your interested in will provide you consistently with what your looking for.

Are the photos in focus? Dancing, walking, bouquet tosses, garter tosses etc are all fast moving activities which require the proper equipment to be able to photograph. If the photos look blurry or just lack that overall sharpness I would suggest moving on...

How do the colors look? Any purple people, overly orange skin tones? Do the backgrounds of the photos look bright or like they were shot in a cave. This is another area where an experienced photographer will consistently deliver the same results.

These are probably the two most critical areas to review when selecting a photographer based on quality. The rest is really just your personal vision and preference.

Just so you know that I practice what I preach I am inviting every one of my perspective clients to have a look at my client galleries. On my main site it is the third link: client proofs. Unless my clients request their galleries to be password protected all the photos they received can be viewed there.

Weekend Warrior

This weekend was filled with all the things I love. Date night with my husband, wedding photography and meeting with a new bride.

A lot of things have been going on in the Osborne household and the #1 thing my husband and I needed this weekend was a little R&R... Since I was headed down to highlands ranch anyway it seemed like the perfect time to make a getaway of it. We stayed at the Hyatt Grand Regency in the DTC and had a fabulous dinner at Cheesecake Factory. We took our cheesecake to go and had breakfast the next morning at our favorite place, The Original Pancake House.

From there it was off to shoot a wedding with my dear friend Amy of True Photography. The wedding was held at Cherry Hills Community Church. Everything about this church was stunning. From its high vaulted ceilings to its ornate stained glass windows it was practically made to host weddings. This particular bride and groom chose to keep their identity private so this post will not feature their story as my wedding blogposts usuallly do. Instead I will let their photos tell it for me.

Saturday night I had the pleasure of meeting with a new couple regarding their upcoming wedding. I loved how they really placed a lot of emphasis on capturing the story of their wedding. The bride was a big fan of detail shots (as am I) and the wedding they are planning is unlike anything I have ever shot. I always love meeting with new people and just seeing how absolutely in love they are, completing each others sentences, talking about their future...

I've got to say it is nice to be home though. For those of you who don't know shooting a wedding is physically gruelling. I liken it to how a person feels after skiing all day. You use muscles you didn't know you had an in essence tighten your whole frame for the entire day making it into a makeshift tripod. Today I napped, went swimming and just spent some quality time with my family. I love my life... I really couldn't ask for anything more.

Second to my passion for wedding and portrait photography is my love for sports photography. In a prior career I braved the elements at snow ridden high school football games, spent my weekends sidelined at soccer tournaments and often found myself along the baselines of baseball games. Sports Photography and Wedding photography actually have a lot in common believe it or not. Both require the photographer to be a keen observer, wait for the perfect moment and be quick with their trigger finger.

Busy with weddings for most of the year I always find it a treat when I get to do some work for my husbands company Osborne Athletics, http://osborneathletics.com/. While helping him with his lineup for this next years schedule I thought it might be interesting to highlight what exactly Osborne Athletics does with a blog post.

Most of you have been to some kind of tournament sporting event. Could have been a little league game, club soccer etc... Proud parents lining the sidelines trying to catch their little athlete in action. They can never quite get close enough to the action and often times just don't have the caliber of equipment to be able to shoot like the "pros". Osborne Athletics is based upon the principle of bringing high quality professional sports photography to parents and organizations at an affordable price. They do team photos, individual portraits, ofcourse action photos and have some awesome custom posters and trading cards.

Client Questions: How did you change from a newsroom photographer to a wedding photographer?

For those of you who may not know I got my start in photography as a newsroom photographer. I shot for numerous publications throughout Southern Colorado. During this time I covered all kinds of events BUT it was the tougher events, the least interesting that gave me my eye for photojournalism. I remember being sent to a ballot counting. I watched as a county clerk fed ballots into a machine and wrote down the numbers. How in the heck was I going to find an interesting angle for this one? Business openings were the worst, owners in front of cash registers finding the "photojournalism" angle and not just posing them fictitiously was the real challenge. These assignments helped me to develop the ability to see what is going on behind the scenes. Take something that the normal everyday person would see a certain way and give them a completely new angle on it.

I shot my first wedding as a favor to a couple of friends. I did not charge merely accepted enough money to be able to buy myself a professional flash for the big day. Climbing on the furniture capturing the bride laughing with her bridesmaids, photographing her mom's face when she saw her daughter for the first time, 30 minutes in and I was hooked forever.

Weddings are a whole different animal when compared to news. News is so fleeting, so momentary. Although you do impact history as a record in my opinion its nothing like the record you create with wedding photographs. The market for wedding photography is so saturated nowadays. One thing that immediately put me off was the fact that people willing to pay top dollar seemed to often be coupled with a photographer who cared less about what he was photographing and more about how much money he was raking in.

As a wedding photographer I realize the responsibility I have to my clients. They will remember their wedding largely from their photographs. What is photographed, when and where is up to me, their photographer. Their photos will adorn walls, scrapbooks, photo albums, dvd's etc... They will be mailed to grandma, given to aunt susie as a gift and passed down throughout their family as an heirloom. Prized possessions and a lasting reminder of such an important fleeting moment... As most brides will tell you as was my own experience your wedding day goes by in a second. Before you know it's gone...

I do portrait work, dabble in sports photography and still occasionally chase after editorial work. But its with my camera in my hands, watching for that magic moment, recording history that makes me most happy in this lifetime. Do what you love... what else is there?

New Blog, New Logo... New Website(s)????

The new year is fast approaching and with this new year is coming a new Ardent. This past year has been amazing. I've met so many great people and gotten to share in some amazing experiences. Whether it was the excitement of bridal festivals, the busy days (and nights) of wedding season or all those new editions to my client's families... I've loved it all and I just feel blessed to have my passion be my profession.

That being said I am looking forward to what the future holds for Ardent.

New Logo ~

My husband designed the new and fantastic new logo you see at the top of this blog. When he asked me what I wanted for the design I thought it was interesting that many of the things I wanted in a logo are things I strive for in my photographs. I wanted it to be simple, classic and timeless. I wanted to to show a feminine perspective and be something personal. The cherry blossoms tie into my japanese heritage and I think the lowercase lettering just keys my clients into the fact that I am very laid back, easy going, simple.

New Blog ~

It's pink!?!? I wanted to have a less commercial and more personal looking blog. I always strive to really get to know my clients. When photographing their lives this helps immensely as it really gives me insight into their personalities. Keeping to this same theory I wanted to have a blog to share client photos, client stories and the things that are happening for me personally. Having a one column blog will let me showcase my photographs the way they were meant to be seen, BIG! What good is a blog if you don't blog? Precisely... No more will you hear the sound of crickets, things are about the be very active here with new sessions, insightful posts about photography and ofcourse a new years worth of trials and tribulations for the Osborne Family.

New Website(s)??? ~

Thats right WEBSITES plural... I have decided to split my website into two: one for my wedding clientele and one for my portrait clientele. They really are two seperate focuses and deserve to be showcased on their own without the clutter of the other. My url http://ardentphotographyinc.com/ will still be the hub for both sites, you will just not have the choice of viewing my wedding info & portfolio seperately from my portrait photography. These should be up by the weekend (fingers crossed) just in time for some very exciting new projects I have starting.

I also want to take the time to thank everyone who reads this blog. I find it interesting how often my current clients or potential new clients tell me "I saw that one your blog!" Keep reading it's about to get interesting...

Client Questions Answered: Who is your second photographer...

A second photographer comes standard in every one of my packages. One thing I was asked during my last interview was WHO my second photographer is... This is an excellent question. Far too often photographers bring along a family member, amateur or otherwise unqualified second photographer. Perhaps this is because they feel that the second photographers shots are extra, buffer for the shots they take as the main photographer. This could not be further from the truth.

A good second photographer will provide you with a totally different outlook and style than your main photographer. Their creative eye will capture those extra details. As a primary photographer there are certain events and/or places that I need to photograph in a certain manner. A second photographer is free to roam and really bring you a fresh perspective on the weddings events. Having a lot of out of town guests that you don't see very often? I often have my second photographer go table to table creating a photographic record of those who attended. Have a new addition to the family or a group that doesn't get together very often? I often encourage my couples to let their family and friends know that if they would like a professional photo taken during the wedding they may approach my second photographer.

That being said my primary second photographer is Amy Wadlington. Amy is a professional photographer and owns her own company based out of Denver. Perhaps her biggest strength as a photographer is her keen sense for emotion. The photos she takes for me are consistently just dripping with emotion. If there is someone in the room laughing, crying or just having a great time Amy has her camera aimed right at them. She is personable, professional and really down to earth often interacting with guests... showing them pictures on the back of the camera, answering questions about coverage and just having a wonderful time sharing in the occasion.
In this photographers world especially a picture is said to be worth 1000 words... I gathered a group of Amy's photos that I would like to share in order to illustrate the importance and unique perspective that having a second photographer can add...

During the beginning of the ceremony as a primary photographer I am often at the front of the aisle, photographing people as they approach the alter. During our last wedding Amy was opposite my position at the back watching for photo opportunities with the bridal party prior to coming up the aisle. Another advantage of having a second photographer comes during the formal shots. Often times its the moment's in between the group shots and posed formals that really capture the emotion of the day. As the primary photographer I was grouping these two into poses and checking to make sure that the concepts I was trying to convey were working on the back of my camera. One of my favorite things to do with my photos is enter them in contests. Going through the entry process really allows me to analyze my photos to find my strongest images. This often teaches me so much about myself as a photographer. This is not business related, this is not photo related this is a post about my dear darling husband and how I'm a "kept" woman.

Getting my new D300 was Rick's idea. I have never in my life had anyone believe in me and offer as much support as he does. I am so fortunate to have found a man who is so thoughful, so giving, so caring and unselfish. He is so easy to love...

My D300 arrived and was quickly wrapped in a shiny red bow. Inside was a hand written letter that told me how he knew that with this new tool I could take my photography to the next level. He said no one would ever believe in me as much as he does. That this would help us to build a better life for our family and that Chloe Lynn would thank me someday. The entire package was just too lovely for words so if you know me ofcourse I took pictures...

And ofcourse my new baby...

Things have been changing. Ad campaigns, higher end luxury albums, new lenses and now (finally) a new camera. at 9:49 am this morning my new baby arrived here in Laramie.

I am now the proud owner of a brand spankin new Nikon D300. Most of this is techno mumbo jumbo (which I will post for those interested) however here are a few simpler explanations for why I picked this model. The D300 is the newest top of the line medium format DSLR. It has a 12.3 mega pixel sensor, 51 point auto focus system and is amazing under low light high ISO conditions aka every wedding I have ever shot.

I am a firm believer in the photographer NOT the camera making the difference. You could hand someone inexperienced a D300 vs a pro with a disposable and hands down the pro will win every time. That being said the tools which a professional photographer has at their disposal can make a world of difference in the quality of their images as well as the creativity they are able to utilize. Armed with my new D300 I am ready to take the next step with my photos. I believe each one of my clients deserve the absolute best as far as their photos are concerned. That means shooting with the absolute best. Welcome home D300... I've been waiting.

Sarah & Brian, Part Two ~ A mini session...

Sarah & Brian are my first wedding clients since I changed my focus to Northern Colorado. You may remember them from their engagement session in Loveland. These two live in Fort Collins and after recently falling in love with Olde Town we decided to meet up downtown for a mini session. Their park session was filled with laughs, giggles and playful water fighting. All dolled up in dress clothes we decided to make thesea a bit more on the serious side. Here are a few of my favorites...

After launching a brand new theknot.com ad campaign and getting to meet so many new brides at the festivals I have visited I thought it would be helpful to create a posting describing what it is like to work with me as your wedding photographer. This will go over the process and what you can expect from our first meeting to the delivery of your wedding pictures.

Initial Meeting:

When a potential client contacts me regarding wedding photography the first step in the process is an initial meeting. Usually we will meet somewhere quiet and central like a starbucks. This is a great opportunity for us to discuss what you are looking for in a wedding photographer. I bring to this meeting a physical copy of my portfolio, a pricing/testimonials sheet and sample albums. I will go over my contract and leave you a copy, I won't pressure you into making a decision right then however. Who you choose as your wedding photographer is a very big decision, one that requires time to really go over your options.

Booking:

You've decided to book. You've thought about everything your looking for and what I have to offer will give you that. In order to reserve your date I would require 50% of the total and a signed contract. The second half of your total won't be due until 30 days prior to your event. Now its time to book your complimentary engagement session. Together we will brainstorm the perfect location(s). It could be the place he proposed, where you went on your first date, your favorite park or somewhere with a different type of scenery than you will have for your wedding formals.

Engagement Shoot:

We will meet for your engagement shoot at spend at least an hour exploring our location(s). During this time I really love to capture the two of you as you are. I encourage you to interact with one another naturally just as if I wasn't there. We will get those posed shots that you might use for the announcement or your save the dates as well. However what I am really striving to capture in this session is the love and emotion the two of you share. You can bring as many outfits as you like, I would also recommend wearing comfy shoes as we will be exploring!

Processing:

All of your engagement photos will be digitally processed and enhanced. Colors will be brightened, contrast will be increased, images will be sharpened. if inspired by an images I will get creative perhaps adding a texture, or giving it that 'retro' feel. In any case you will receive a CD of the high res images in color, black and white and a third copy if any special effects were applied.

Location Scout:

You won't need to be present for this step. Prior to your wedding date I will visit your venue. If possible I will discuss your setup with your coordinator. I will scout out the locations we will use for our formal photos. This will give me a better idea of what we can do on your special day to creatively capture your event.

Final Meeting:

About 1 month prior to the wedding date we will meet again. Either in person or via telephone. At this time we will discuss the actual timeline of the event. We can share ideas for photos. If you have photos that you love and would like recreated please feel free to bring a few of them to this meeting. We will discuss your family formals and who you would like photographed. Additionally I will ask for a list of your vendors. Because they have done so much to make sure your day goes off without a hitch I typically provide them with promotional photos of their products and services as a thank you. It is also during this meeting that we will discuss album options. Albums are a great way to showcase and protect your photos. I offer numerous options of magazine style custom designed albums. Your photos are printed right on the page and chosen by you. Each page is custom designed , I don't use templates. Backgrounds for this album will be actual photos taken during the wedding at your venue and surroundings. In order to ensure that I have enough photos for you album I would need to know before the big day.

The Big Day:

The morning of the wedding I will call you to let you know I am on my way. Since all of my packages come with two photographers both the bride and the groom getting ready will be covered. I will start with with bride while our second photographer will be with the groom. After I have taken the getting ready shots as well as formals the second photographer and I will switch allowing me to take the formal shots of the groom and groomsmen. During your ceremony both the second photographer and I will capture every detail moving discreetly throughout the ceremony so as not to distract the guests or interrupt the natural events. After the ceremony we will begin taking your formal photos starting with family, progressing to the entire bridal party and ending with the bride and groom. Similar to your engagement session our formals will be very natural, relaxed, portraying the love and excitement between the two of you. We can take these are the ceremony location or even pick out a special locations just for these shots. Complete photo journalistic coverage of the reception is a must and with the benefit of having two photographers you'll get every event from 2 angles.

Processing & Delivery:

After the wedding it will take approximately 4-6 weeks for the photos to be completed. You will be provided with an online gallery to share the photos with family and friends. While I may be working on multiple weddings all at once I would encourage you to keep checking your gallery regularly. As photos are processed they will begin to appear. They will all be digitally enhanced and color corrected just like the engagement session. Once again you will receive the CD with high res copies in color, black and white as well as a third copy if I were to apply an artistic effect. Want to create your own prints? You are given personal copyright allowing you to have photos printed whenever, wherever. Looking for a higher quality print? Perhaps something bigger than an 8X10 or something on a specialty paper? My website allows you the option of ordering professional quality prints from Ardent.

Album Creation:

After your photos are done you are ready to choose those that you want designed into an album. The number of photos you are able to choose depends on the album you choose. 50% of the album total is due at this time in order for creation of your album to begin. It usually takes about 3-4 weeks for your album to be designed and sent to the binder. Once your album is complete the remaining portion of the total will be due prior to it being sent to you or picked up.

FAQ Section:

Can I give you a list of shots that I would like taken during my wedding?

Many wedding planning books suggest bringing a list of shots you would like to have. While initially this may seem like a good idea when you are looking for photo journalistic coverage this may in fact hinder your results. Photo journalistic coverage captures your wedding as a story. Starting from beginning to end and built as the events unfold. It is extremely important for me as your photographer to be able to concentrate on everything that is happening around me. Concentrating on a list of shots may cause me to miss what is happening naturally. If you have an experienced photographer and have picked based on their style of photographs being your style you won't have to worry about the important events being missed. The photos you will receive from Ardent will be EXACTLY like the photos on our website, marketing materials and samples. I provide each client with the same level of creativity and high quality coverage.

I don't need everything in my package can I swap for something I do need?

Absolutely. My packages are meant to serve as a guideline. If there are items you are not in need of I would be happy to replace them with something you DO need. Please feel free to contact me regarding your unique situation.

I am on a budget but love your work. Are your prices negotiable?

When I started as a wedding photographer one of my main focuses was to be able to provide high quality fine art wedding photography at a price that people could afford. When deciding on my package pricing I researched the markets where I offer my services. I tried to see what other photographers of my skill and experience were charging their customers and give MY customers a better deal. Because of this my pricing is as quoted. I do occasionally run specials that will provide a discount. In addition if you really are on a budget we may be able to accommodate you by removing pieces of the package that you may not be needing. Removing the second photographer for instance will bring the price of any package down by $200.00, if your not in need of an engagement session you can take $100.00 off and so on and so forth.

Kara & Scott ~ Estes Park, CO

There is a certain way a man in love will look at his bride on their wedding day... This is the way Scott looks at Kara... I had the pleasure of photographing their Estes Park wedding this past Saturday.

When I first met with Kara I knew she was the kind of person that I would like to be good friends with. Planning a green wedding she is thoughtful, kind and has this infectious laugh. Working with her and Scott was hardly work at all but more like attending the wedding of two very good friends.

The day was gorgeous, the wedding party in great spirits and the bride and groom were ready. The ceremony and reception were both held at Mary's Lake Lodge. One of the things I loved about their wedding was how laid back and personalized it was. They had a wine theme complete with wine bottle lanterns, cork table cards and a "unity wine tasting." A close friend performed the ceremony, Kara had a bridesman and Scott had a groomswoman. When the earrings Kara had planned on wearing for the wedding went missing the night before she calmy tried on a new pair and went with the flow, liking them even better. They had a gorgeous towering cup cake cake which tasted even better than it looked.

My second photographer was the lovely and talented Amy Wadlington of True Photography. I was so proud of her when during our formal shots she scaled a mini mountain to get a better angle. Way to go Amy us wedding photogs LOVE to climb on things.

It has been a little while since my last post. I've been working *promise*... With the end of wedding season approaching I am striving to get caught up before wedding planning season goes into full swing. Besides the Stone Mountain Lodge show I am also promoting at the Sunset Event Center show in Fort Collins, CO, updating my website to be a new blog based interface and launching a knot.com ad campaign. I've been keeping with my 365 depsite being sicker than a dog this last week...

This has been a crazy summer. This morning I walked out on my front porch. Engulfed in the familiar smells of fall and surrounded by its leafy remnants its good to finally be home. I have been going going going since May. No time to breathe... Its been amazing but I am looking forward to fall.

There are photography trends that come and go. A big part of my job is knowing what is hot right now in the bridal market. I need to keep refining my skills and staying sharp on my creativity. One of the newest trends that I love is texture.

Some of the photographers who are my texture heros currently are:

Jesh De Rox ~ Jesh is a true artist. Everything he touches is just too beautiful. He is a master at his craft. While I may not care for the processing of EVERY photo the biggest thing that keeps me coming back for more is that EVERY photo makes you feel something.

Red Leaf Studios ~ I heart Red Leaf Studios. Not only are they amazing at what they do but they also share this information through tutorials and textures for purchase. Anyone who has such amazing talent yet is kind enough to give back and inspire others will always have a special place in my heart.

Anything textured now adays is marketed as "fine art" and just has the creative artistic feel to it... Thought I would try my hand at textures with a few of Sarah & Brian's photos. They seemed to be up for anything. Voila... (in order of my favorites from least to most)

I was reading a photographer profile at Don't Box Us In, and came across the following poem that embodies the way I feel about photography. I wanted to share it with you. I know it is aimed toward writers but it can be applied to photography (or any art form) very easily.

Rick is back and my world is new again. Last night I met him after his flight in Ft. Collins. We stayed at our favorite hotel, ordered room service and had coffee and cinnamon rolls for breakfast. Its good to have him back. Today's main focus will be some artistic processing that I have been aching to do. I have some experimental techniques involving textures that I will be sharing once they are complete. For now let me end with a couple of photos from my 365 project...

Yesterday evening I was scrambling to find an image for my 365. Eyes open I spotted these beautiful maroon leaves against a f ence by my home. Upon further inspection I found these delicate berries. The quote refers to my project... Having the idea to do a 365 means nothing if I lack the dedication and desire to see it through.

Most of you may know me as your wedding photographer. Maybe I've taken your family portrait or photographed your children. Although I love my wedding and portrait photography I have worked hard over the last year or so to really cultivate myself creatively as an artist. When I found my love for photography it was people that I was naturally drawn to photograph. By opening my eyes as an artist to the world around me I feel that my photography became more complete.

Stone Mountain Lodge Bridal Festival - Lyons, CO

Sunday I had the honor of showing at the Stone Mountain Lodge Bridal Festival in beautiful Lyons, CO. After a very busy wedding season it was nice to get back into the festival circuit and meet new brides who are just beginning to plan their weddings. I spoke with quite a few couples about their wedding plans and really just had a blast talking about what I love best - WEDDINGS! In addition to getting the word out about Ardent Photography I also had the pleasure of meeting some new colleagues within the industry. I wanted to take some time to share their information with you all in case you are looking for the services they offer. To any of you reading this from the festival it was a pleasure meeting you and good luck with your wedding plans.

Ahhh Mobile Spa - Amber from Ahhh Mobile Spa has a great idea going here. They are a full service spa that is (like the name suggests) MOBILE. They come to you to do hair, nails, makeup basically the works! What a great idea! I will definitely be passing her info along often.

Shamane's Bake Shoppe - Based out of Boulder, CO Shamane's wedding cakes are to die for. I sampled a Citron Raspberry Cake and was in heaven. Which is saying a lot coming from me because I eat a LOT of wedding cake (occupational perk!). She creates custom cakes that are so creative and lovely. I was speaking with her briefly about a certain cake she created for an outdoorsy couple that was a mountain complete with a hiking trail! If your ever in the Boulder ares stop by for a free tasting!

Stone Mountain Lodge - Set among the beautiful scenery in majestic Lyons, CO the Stone Mountain Lodge is the perfect place to give your wedding that mountain feel without being overly commercialized like some venues. They do have cozy cabins on site and can accommodate around 170 people under their gorgeous big top tent. The staff there is very friendly and the grounds are beautiful. Definitely a must see when looking for a venue.

I am husbandless for the next two days. Rick flew to WI for business this morning for business. He won't be returning till Wednesday evening and boy am I blue. Good thing I have lots of processing to keep me busy!

Bryn & Daniel ~ Steamboat Springs, CO

They met halfway across the world, he proposed in the jungles of Thialand, London is where they now reside... These two could have picked anywhere in the world to exchange their vows. That anywhere was the stunningly beautiful Steamboat Springs, CO, This past Saturday I had the honor of photographing Bryn & Daniel's wedding. My friend & esteemed colleague Amy Wadlington of True Photography assisted me as second shooter.

Set among the woodlands the scenery was stunning. Being that we are working with Colorado weather here we did have some rain but Bryn & Daniel were not concerned. Plans changed, then changed again... after a shot gun start in the eye of the storm they pledged their love and exchanged their vows. One thing I absolutely loved about their wedding was the careful thought and planning that went into the details. From Bryn's beautiful dress and her unique shoes to the moving passages read during the ceremony these two really made it their own.

Here are a few of my favorites from the day. Bryn & Daniel seeing the way the two of you look into each others eyes I am certain your lives will forever be changed by your union. Good luck with everything, here is to all tha happiness two people can enjoy! Thank you for letting me be a part of your special day.

Minneapolis Bound - 365 Style

Wednesday evening I embarked an a last minute journey to Minneapolis with my husband. An afternoon in the city and about 28 hours worth of open road I did my best to keep with my 365 challenge. As promised here is the blog with my visual explorations. Not much on tap for today. I do need to blog about the fabulous wedding I shot in Aspen last weekend so that will be my primary focus for this evening. This weekend I am showing at a bridal festival in Lyons, CO. There is endless preperation to be done for this so I am sure I can manage to keep myself busy this weekend...

Sarah & Brian ~ Viestenz-Smith Park Loveland, Colorado

When I was first contacted by Sarah & Brian the thing that absolutely struck me about the two of them was their individuality. They were looking for a photographer who would not only take a good portrait but someone who would also strive to know them. Someone who would take in the concepts they wanted photographically, combine these with their personalities, add a little creative vision and voila... fireworks. On Sunday when we all met at Viestenz-Smith Park in Loveland we found nothing less...

For anyone who has not visited this park it is a MUST. Its beautiful park, romantic and very versatile. Bridges, playgrounds, benches, trees and a great river it really does have something for everyone. The SOMETHING that this park held for Sarah and Brian is the mystique of being the place they "courted" one another over lunch time rendezvous. I love that we held the session in a place that was so special to them.

Sarah & Brian it was lovely to meet you. I hope these do justice to what you were searching for. I can't wait for the wedding in May! Without further adieu here are a few of my favorites.

Project: 365

When I found photography I found my voice in the world. I have always noticed that as an artist I just saw the world differently. I always had SOMETHING to say. I tried painting, drawing and music to no avail. With a camera in my hands however it finally clicked.

I am self taught and photography OBSESSED.

Some things I love in this world:

My husband, who is my rock and the love of my life
The smell of a great cup of coffee
Deep rich colors that come out only when it rains
The way my lungs feel after a good run

Saturday I started a new project. Its called a 365 and until now I just have not been diligent enough to be able to complete one. The goal is to go out with my camera and take 1 picture (or more) EVERYDAY for 365 days. Whether it is a photo from a session, a photo safari or even just things I see everyday this will keep my skills sharp and help me to be more creative. Photos from my 365 can be seen HERE.

I will also be trying to blog "365" and posting the photos here. Being that we are 3 days in I thought I would get caught up. I hope you enjoy these as much as I enjoyed taking them.

This photo was taken while driving through Rocky Mountain National Park. I named it "Chloe" because of the peace I found when I came across it. This has very special meaning to me...

Believe it or not this is someones driveway. Isn't it amazing? I am a big time symmetry girl so when I saw this from the road I just couldn't help getting out my camera and snapping away.

Taken in Fort Collins again at the trial gardens off of College. These gardens are so interesting! They basically test out planting thousands of different species of flowers to see which will grow in the Rocky Mountain Region. I love this photo because of its intricacy... its tubular appearance.

Bad luck...

I have been going over and over exactly how to write this next post. With a wedding on Saturday and an Engagement on Sunday this was a very sensitive time and subject, one that I want to address however wanted to wait to do so on my own time schedule. For those that may not have heard my husband and I miscarried Friday afternoon. After our little one measuring a little small we were due for a check up around the end of the month. Thursday I was feeling off then after a few complications we went to visit our doctor. He assured us that this can only be chalked up to "bad luck". Statistics say that 3 in 10 babies are not carried to term.

For the clients that I saw this weekend, whom I probably discussed Baby Osborne with please know it was not my intention not to tell you... However the occasions we were there to share were just too important to be tainted with bad news. Weddings, celebrations and ofcourse engagements are such happy times and its your day. In addition to working this weekend my husband and I had the chance to sort out how we feel, be there for each other. Our drive back from Steamboat took us through Rocky Mountain National Park. Surrounded by the changing leaves, driving among the clouds and with the man who is my rock, my everything, my life... I found peace. If there is one lesson I have learned in this life it is that everything happens for a reason. I believe this and I put my faith in God. All is not lost, this truly is just "bad luck". I know that there is a plan for our family and I can't wait until it unfolds.

Processing Princess

Things have been crazy! I am finally getting caught up on all the work that has been evading me this wedding season. I am closing out a few sessions/weddings and excited to be on the road again this weekend. I am going to be visiting my family Friday evening then off to Steamboat for Bryn & Daniel's wedding Saturday afternoon. Steamboat is beautiful this time of year and the weather is supposed to be great! Sunday I may have an engagement session depending on a few factors. So like always this weekend will be busy, photo filled and exactly what I love to be doing with my life.

I'm one of those girls who keeps everything. Every Christmas card, every love letter, old emails, trinkets, broken bits and pieces of those special items that are irreplaceable. As a photographer this translates as a need to capture those special details in photos for each and every one of my clients. I will be the photographer obsessing over your guest book, papparazzi'ing your something blue and my brides should never be surprised when just as dinner starts I come and ask "Can I borrow your ring..." Programs, makeup, centerpieces, table cards nothing gets left out at an Ardent wedding.

In addition to covering their weddings I often also do portrait work for a number of my couples. Maternity photos, newborn photos, family portraits and special occasions. Whenever I visit their homes I arrive to see their album on their coffee table, their favorite wedding picture blown up and framed over their mantle and of course random candids scattered throughout their decor. What I don't usually see is their programs, their place cards, centerpieces etc... Most likely it would be a task to find their invitations or those perfect little mints that adorned the tables. Feedback I get time and time again from my clients is how happy they were to have put the proper importance on finding a photographer who will capture photos of these intricate details.

Over the years I have collected some beautiful details and photographed some stunning rings! I thought I would share with you all a few of my favorites.

Ofcourse I was overjoyed when I found out Rick and I were expecting. One of the things that came to mind immediately though was how this was going to affect my photography. I am now officially at the end of my first trimester. What a ride this has been. I've been tired out of my mind, queesy, sensitive to smell, moody and most of all HUNGRY lol. Post processing has been a little slower than usual. I just wanted to take some time to thank all of my clients for being very patient and understanding. Now that I am on to the second trimester I've got my energy back and my spirits are up. Just in time too as bridal festival season is soon to be in full swing. I also wanted to share with everyone a photo that my second photographer Amy Wadlington of True Photography took while we were shooting for Jennifer & Allen. Awwww look at my little baby bump! I am due to go into the doc early next month so I will have more of an update then.

Black Tie, Elegant, To the Nines... these are perhaps just a few phrases that could be used to describe Jennifer & Allen's beautiful Saturday wedding. From the intricate details, the stunning choice in bridesmaids dresses and of course the talented harpist it was an absolute pleasure to photograph this Gatsby'esque wedding. Some of you may remember Jennifer and Allen from their engagement session nearly a year ago. Just as in love now as they were then my job is easy when two people are this perfect for one another.

The wedding and reception were both held at the Tennis Pavilion in Denver, CO. This is part of the Phipps Mansion Conference Center facilities. Driving up to the venue it one has no idea of the lavish and stunning gardens held within its walls. Ranked by the Smithsonian, named by 5280 Magazine as one of the top places to be married outdoors in Colorado, this was the perfect place for these two to tie the knot.

The wedding party was a blast. They were up for anything and lets be honest that's a good looking group! Dancing into the night, candlelit talks outside among friends or socializing under the Parisian inspired awnings there was no way to leave this wedding without having a great time. Dinner was catered by the Bistro Boys. It was upscale and Delicious. BUT I have to say that their cake was AMAZING. Just another perk of being a wedding photographer lol.

Jennifer and Allen, thank you so much for letting me be a part of your special day and tell your story. I can see the love that fairy tale you have for one another and I know that you both have amazing things ahead for you. Keep hold of those great friends, they will love and support you more than you will ever know.

The Importance of A Good Night Out

With my husband starting a brand new company in Fort Collins and Ardent coming to the end of a very successful wedding season date nights have been far and in between. If I am being honest there are days when we hardly even see each other. Family is extremely important to us both and lucky for me my husband is a firm believer (as am I) in the importance of a good night out. Last night after work we met for dinner in Fort Collins. After doing a little bit of research on Fort Collins eateries and of course adoring anything Italian we decided on Bisetti's located on College. The atmosphere was romantic, the food was great and even better even though it appeared to be very upscale it was a very laid back place one could definitely visit in jeans. After a wonderful meal I ordered dessert to go. As a continuation of our night on the town (as well as being about an hour away from home) we decided to just stay in town. If you ever need a place to stay in Fort Collins let me recommend the Hilton on Prospect Rd. I have stayed there before when on assignment and I have to tell you the beds are to die for. With a Starbucks in the lobby and exquisite blueberry pancakes for breakfast this place was practically made for me.

Driving back this morning I felt refreshed, rejuvenated and more importantly just head over heels in love with the man of my dreams. Singing in the car and just excited about the day I decided to write a post on the importance of "Date Night".

Today I am using my new found inspiration to post process and research for Saturdays wedding. I also want to take the time to wish my dear friend and colleague Amy Wadlington of True Photography HAPPY BIRTHDAY! She is accompanying me as second shooter for Jen and Allen's wedding this Saturday but not before a good girls night out tomorrow night in celebration of another fabulous year come and gone. A much needed vacation is exactly what this photographer needs... I can't wait!

Finally Friday Update

This week has flown by. I have spent my days and night at the computer processing my little heart away. Just another one of the perks of a very busy wedding season. I wanted to take a little break to catch my breath and write a post.

Baby Osborne update: Rick and I had an appointment last week. My husband was in rare form. When the nurse asked me my symptoms I of course startled rattling them off... headaches, back aches, fatigue etc... I hear a little whisper behind me and turn to Rick to ask what he had said. He just smiled at me with those irresistible dimples and said "Irritability...". I about died laughing. The nurse didn't think it was nearly as funny. We got to hear the heartbeat and see our little rascal on the big screen. Holding my hand and looking at me all teary eyed I think it finally set in for him. We are going to have baby in 7 months! The doctor thought it was amusing that even though I am a photographer he was the first one to photograph Chloe...

Labor day weekend is finally hear and I am just going to stay in and have a weekend of catching up. Tomorrow starts University Football here in Wyoming so I may take my husband to a game as a treat for putting up with my "irritability' lol. Next weekend I have the pleasure of photographing Jennifer & Alan's wedding in Denver which I am really looking forward to. Even though there is a lack of posting I have been hard at work and should have some photos from my recent work up shortly. Take care...

Quiet

Things have been quiet around here... she must be processing lol. Baby Osborne is making it tough to do just about anything. I've been a little under the weather lately but yes processing processing processing. I thought I would share a few gems. I love both of these photos.

This weekend I am off for a double feature portrait session... Friday evening I will be doing a family portrait, then following up with an anniversary party on Saturday for the same family. Its a gift and a suprise and I am really delighted and looking forward to being able to capture this momentous occasion. These shoots will bring me back to my old stomping grounds in Colorado. I cannot wait to see my family and friends! I've really been missing everyone since the move. Please enjoy these photos and check back this weekend for many more.

Big news... Rick and I are expecting! We have been planning on starting a family for some time now and I guess now is as good of a time as any. We found out about two days ago and have been over the top excited ever since. Can you imagine being the child of two photographers? This is going to be the most well documented childhood in history. Can we say new photo album every 6 months. Practically born being a ham for the camera right? I am also excited because when the time comes to have my maternity photos done I will get to use the uber fabulous Amy Wadlington of True Photography. Boy or Girl you ask? Well don't all parents say "We don't care as long as the baby is healthy..." well duh ofcourse we want a happy baby. We are secretly hoping for a girl however. We've been tossing around a few names and Chloe Lynn Osborne seems to be the one that has stuck thus far.

To celebrate this fantastic news I will be placing my maternity and newborn sessions on sale for 50% off. For those of you who don't know I have a portable studio that allows me to be able to photograph within someones home. I can do outdoor portraits as well as a mix of private indoor portraits utilizing the natural surroundings within your home, or my portable backdrops for a more 'studio' look. Changes

There have been some big changes in my world including a physical reolcation as well as a brand spankin new blog!

Lets start with the move. Previously I had been in the DTC, Colorado. Now Laramie, WY is my home. My wonderful husband Rick has family here and being that we are looking at starting our new family I fell in love with Laramie.

Why Wyoming? Let me give you an example that I think says it all. This past 4th of July in Laramie I was trying to figure out exactly what Rick and I should do. For those of you that don't know me the 4th of July is one of my favorite holidays, second only to the thanksgiving. In Laramie there is one fourth of July celebration and everyone in town attends. There is such a strong sense of community here. Everyone knows everyone. No one locks their front doors, people leave their keys in their cars around here. Our children will have the same school teachers that my husband had, because every loves their job in sunny Laramie and doesn't ever leave. Its small enough that have that great small town feel, yet with a college in town big enough that this city girl won't be going crazy anytime soon. What does this mean for my current and future Colorado clientele? Nothing I am still going to continue to offer my services to the entire state of Colorado but will also now be focusing some of my marketing on Southern Wyoming as well.

Now lets move onto the new blog. I hope you like it. As you probably saw I was changing themes all the time on the old one. Hosting my blog here lets me have more control over colors, posting, images and most of all really lets me use my creativity. The old blog will still be available and I will be making every effort to create links to previous wedding posts from the other site on this new one.
